
Getting Your SACMI IR Lamps to Keep Up
SACMI rotary blow molding machines are fast. Like, really fast. The PET preform is only in the heating oven for a split second. If your IR lamps are lagging—especially during start-up—or if they can’t hit the right temperature the instant they’re needed, you’re going to have problems. We’re talking uneven walls and that annoying “pearling” on your bottles. Nobody wants to see that on the conveyor belt. The secret is in the response time. To keep up with those SACMI cycle speeds, we had to look at the thermal inertia of the filament. We use shortwave infrared tech with high-density tungsten. By tweaking the voltage-to-wattage ratio, we’ve cut down the time it takes for the lamp to hit full power. These tubes hit peak temp in milliseconds. It means the first bottle gets the exact same heat load as the ten-thousandth. Making it a simple swap We designed these as drop-in replacements. No fuss. They use standard industrial connectors because a loose fit is a disaster—it leads to arcing and kills the lamp early. We also use a specific quartz glass that lets shortwave radiation pass right through. More energy hits the plastic, and less is wasted heating up the oven frame. It’s just more efficient. The catch (and how to handle it) Here’s the thing: when you have this much heat density and speed, it puts a lot of stress on the ends of the lamp. If your cooling blowers aren’t up to the task or if some dust is blocking the airflow, those lamp ends will overheat. That’s the fastest way to burn through a tube. My best advice?**Stay on top of your cooling fan maintenance.**Don’t let them slide. One last tip: keep your voltage stable. If your power grid is jumping around, your oven temps will too. And when that happens, you’ll be forced to slow the whole machine down just to keep the quality from dipping. Not a great way to run a shift.
