
Why You Should Ditch the Old Lamp Warmers for Waterproof Infrared
Ever had a bathroom heater just… pop? It happens all the time with those standard halogen lamps. They aren’t built for steam. You’ve got a scorching hot quartz tube, a cloud of moisture hits it, and crack. Thermal shock. It’s a common headache with the cheap stuff that isn’t sealed right. That’s exactly why more people are switching to high-IP rated infrared heaters for their bathroom renos. Here’s the thing about how they actually work. Most heaters just try to warm up the air. But if you’ve got a drafty bathroom or a window cracked open, that heat just floats away. Infrared is different. It sends heat straight to your skin or the floor. It feels more like standing in the sun. To make that work in a wet room, we use special seals and coated housings so water never touches the electrical guts. If you’re picking one out, check the IP rating. An IPX4 is fine for a few splashes, but if it’s sitting right next to the shower, you need something that can handle a constant barrage of steam and condensation without shorting out. The materials matter too. We use high-grade quartz and reflective coatings to push all that warmth downward where you actually need it. The casing has to be tough—usually aluminum or treated polymers—because corrosion is the enemy here. When a casing isn’t sealed, moisture creeps into the wiring. Then you get oxidation, and eventually, the whole element just burns out. Now, a quick word on the install. These units pack a lot of heat into a tiny space. You can plug them into a standard circuit, but just keep in mind that infrared elements pull a lot of power the second you flip the switch. Make sure your wiring can handle that peak load, or you’ll be tripping your breakers every morning. And a pro tip: while these are way tougher than open-bulb heaters, those seals aren’t immortal. Years of heavy steam will eventually wear them down. It’s a fair trade-off for instant, safe heat, but you’ve got to make sure the gaskets are seated perfectly during the install. If they aren’t, the waterproofing is basically useless.
