When you’re putting a heater in a bathroom, most people just look for an IP55 rating to make sure the electronics don’t fry the first time someone takes a hot shower. But if you’ve got kids or elderly parents in the house, there’s a bigger problem you need to worry about. It’s not actually the heat. It’s the light. The “Blinding” Problem Standard short-wave infrared lamps are bright. Like, “staring into the sun” bright. That kind of glare is a nightmare for your eyes. To fix this, we use special coatings on the quartz tubes. Think of it like a pair of sunglasses for the heater. It filters out those harsh, blinding peaks of light but lets the actual warmth through. You get that cozy, skin-warming feeling without feeling like you’re in an operating room. Keeping the Water Out Now, the IP55 stuff. Basically, it means the unit can handle dust and a bit of a spray. We use high-temp gaskets to seal everything up tight so steam doesn’t creep into the electrical terminals. Since these usually go into the ceiling, things can get sweaty and hot up in the crawlspace. We throw in aluminum heat sinks to pull that extra warmth away from the wires. It keeps everything cool and, more importantly, safe. The Trade-off Here’s the catch: you can’t have instant, scorching heat without some light coming off the lamp. It’s just physics. To keep the light soft and easy on the eyes, we sometimes dial the wattage back a bit or use a pulsed heating cycle. Yeah, the room might take a few extra minutes to get perfectly toasted, but it’s a fair trade to avoid a massive headache from eye strain. One last tip for the installers… If you’re wiring these into a high-humidity area, double-check your circuit breakers. Make sure they can handle the inductive load of the timers. If you use a cheap, off-the-shelf switch, the moisture and the constant heating-cooling cycle will eat it alive. It’ll probably burn out in a year. Don’t let that be you.
