
Keeping Your Bathroom Infrared Heaters From Becoming a Hazard
Let’s be real: putting infrared lamps in a bathroom is a bit like playing with fire—or in this case, water and electricity. Steam and moisture are everywhere, and since water loves to conduct electricity, a cheap setup is basically a disaster waiting to happen. If your housing isn’t built for high humidity, you’re looking at short circuits or ground faults. To keep things safe, we stick to three main layers of protection.
Sealing it tight (but not too tight)
We start with high-grade quartz envelopes and specialized seals on the end caps. This stops moisture from sneaking in and ruining the tungsten filament. But the lamp is only half the battle. You need a housing rated IPX4 or IPX5. Why? Because it keeps those random splashes and sprays away from the live terminals. And a quick tip on wiring:forget PVC. Standard PVC cables will melt or crack the second a shortwave lamp hits full power. We use silicone-insulated cables instead. They stay flexible and hold up even when the heat is cranking.
Dealing with leaks
If you’re using a metal chassis—whether it’s for a patio or a bathroom—it has to be hard-grounded. No shortcuts here. We always put a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) in the power chain. Here’s why: if a seal fails and electricity leaks into the casing, the GFCI kills the power in milliseconds. In a wet zone, it’s the only way to make sure nobody gets a nasty shock.
The balancing act: Heat vs. Steam
Here is the tricky part. Tight seals are great for keeping water out, but they’re a nightmare for heat. If you seal the unit too tightly, the heat gets trapped inside. The internal temperature spikes, and suddenly you’re burning out your wiring or killing the life of your lamp. You have to find that sweet spot—a ventilation path that lets the heat breathe without letting the steam in. One last thing: check your connectors. Loose R7s or Sk15 sockets create hotspots. In a humid room, those hotspots cause corrosion, which eats through your insulation. **Tighten everything.**Use heat-shrink tubing on your solder joints. It takes an extra minute, but it saves you a massive headache later.
