
Why Most Chicken Coop Heaters Fail (and How We Fixed It)
If you’ve ever run a chicken coop, you know it’s a nightmare for electronics. Between the thick humidity and the ammonia fumes, it’s basically a chemistry experiment designed to kill your equipment. Most waterproof infrared heaters look great on paper, but they usually die in the same spot: where the lead wire enters the lamp. The seal gets brittle, moisture sneaks in, and—pop—you’ve got a short circuit.
The heat problem
Here is the thing about infrared lamps. When they get hot, that heat doesn’t just go toward the birds. It travels backward, right into the electrical connections. Cheap heaters use basic silicone or low-grade plastics. Those materials just can’t take the heat. They bake, they crack, and eventually, they stop being a seal and start being a doorway for water. We do things differently. We don’t just slap some glue on a wire and call it a day. We use high-temp potting compounds and compression seals. It keeps everything tight and vacuum-sealed, even when the lamp is cranking out max heat.
It’s all in the details
A lot of factories rush the assembly line. They skip the degassing phase or use too little sealant, which leaves tiny air bubbles trapped inside. That sounds minor, but it’s a disaster. Those bubbles expand when they get hot, creating micro-cracks. Once that happens, moisture starts “wicking”—basically crawling along the wire insulation straight into the heating element. We make sure there are zero voids in the seal. We control the temperature and pressure during the curing process so the wire is locked in tight. It won’t leak, and it definitely won’t pull out.
One quick tip for setup
Since we’ve made the seal this tight, the wire is a bit more rigid near the head. Just a heads-up: don’t try to bend the wire at a sharp angle right where it enters the lamp. If you force it, you might stress that internal seal. Just leave a little bit of a loop when you’re wiring it up. Give it some breathing room, and it’ll last you way longer.
